The extension of the popular soft plastics recycling trial has been welcomed by councillors.
This month, a further 23,000 households will be included in the scheme that sees ‘soft’ plastics such as plastic bags and wrappers recycled separately.
The Conservative councillors on South Gloucestershire Council have described the latest extension as “brilliant news” for South Glos as it will help to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.
The trial started under the council’s previous Conservative administration, and the Conservative Group is campaigning for all households in the district eventually to be part of the scheme.
Cllr Matthew Riddle, Conservative councillor for Severn Vale on South Gloucestershire Council, said: “This innovative scheme has been hugely popular since its introduction under our leadership in 2022, and its continuation is brilliant news for everybody in South Glos.
“When we declared a climate emergency back in 2019, we were serious about addressing climate change at a local level. By encouraging people to recycle soft plastic, we are helping our residents to do their bit to protect the environment for current and future generations.”
Cllr Becky Romaine, Conservative councillor for Chipping Sodbury and Cotswold Edge on South Gloucestershire Council, said: “I’m thrilled to see that a number of streets in my ward are included in this latest extension of the trial.
“I have been campaigning for our rural areas to be included in the scheme and I’m delighted to see that this has paid off.”
Luke Hall, Conservative Member of Parliament for Thornbury and Yate, said: “I am very pleased that many more of our towns and villages will be included in the next stage of the soft-plastic recycling rollout.
“Together as a community, we are making South Gloucestershire greener, reducing the amount of plastic and household waste that is being sent to landfill and helping to protect our local environment for future generations.”
While the trial now covers several areas across South Gloucestershire, only households on the selected recycling collection routes are included.
