£100,000 approved for youth projects
Youngsters benefit in Filton, Bradley Stoke, Patchway and Winterbourne
Youth projects across Filton, Bradley Stoke, Patchway and Winterbourne are to benefit from nearly £100,000 of new funding.
At last night’s meeting (Tuesday 14th May 2013) of the authority’s Southern Brooks Area Committee, councillors decided to share out over £97,000 of ‘positive activities funding’ over 3 years to various youth projects:
- · £26,489.18 over 3 years to Bradley Stoke Town Council to fund a girls and young women’s project session, detached youth work and a Youth Council;
- · £42,518 over 3 years to the Southern Brooks Community Partnership to fund activities in Patchway Youth Centre;
- · £13,376.25 over 3 years to Transitions Skate CIC to fund Fromeside Youth Centre, which houses an indoor skate park;
- · £15,000 over 3 years to Pyramid Youth Club in Filton
Because the positive activities funding allocations for Stoke Gifford and Filton had been exceeded, councillors agreed to fund applications for Little Stoke and St Andrews youth centres from the New Homes Bonus funding scheme instead.
Each of the council’s 5 area committees has a budget to fund a fair geographic spread of positive activities for young people across South Gloucestershire.
£33,000 of funding remains available in the 2013/14 financial year for those areas yet to receive any council support for local young people. The next area committee meeting is on 9th July.
Welcoming the funding decisions, Area Committee Chairman Trevor Jones (Con, Frenchay & Stoke Park) said:
“Well done to all the young people who came along to speak at the meeting; it cannot have been easy, but they did a great job and we’re delighted that we were able to support them all with new funding.”
Conservative councillor for Bradley Stoke South Rob Jones said:
“It’s great that Bradley Stoke has been allocated over £26,000 over 3 years to fund a girls and young women’s project session, detached youth work and a Youth Council.
But it was very disappointing to see Labour councillors vote against this funding award, as well as those for Filton, Winterbourne and Patchway.
