‘Support self-build homes’, says councillor
Council to consider increasing support
South Gloucestershire Council is to investigate how it can better help residents to build their own homes, following demands from a local councillor.
Bradley Stoke Central and Stoke Lodge Conservative Councillor Brian Hopkinson demanded at this week's meeting of the authority's Policy and Resources Committee that the council should do more to promote 'self-build'.
As a result, the committee agreed that a report be produced reviewing the existing level of help and assistance and how that can be improved.
Commenting after the meeting, Cllr Hopkinson said:
“We desperately need to help more people to realise their dream of having a home and building your own property can vastly reduce the cost of ownership.
We need to encourage what has been a virtually ignored route to a real affordable home and that means the council making it easier for residents and being as proactive as other councils are.
Any increase in self building can help to stimulate the housing and construction sectors, and the wider economy.”
