Funding for energy switch service
Councillor campaigns for lower energy bills
An energy switching service will be set up in South Gloucestershire to help lower household energy bills, following a leading councillor’s campaign.
A number of local councils around the country have each set up a ‘collective energy switching service’ which enables gas and electricity consumers living locally to combine their purchasing power and get a better deal on their bills.
At a meeting yesterday (Monday 10th June), councillors on the authority’s Policy and Resources Committee agreed £5,000 of funding for a ‘Switch and Save’ service following calls from Cllr Matthew Riddle (Con, Severn) for a local scheme to be set up in the district.
After the meeting, he said:
“I’m delighted that funding has been agreed to support my campaign because we need to do what we can to assist local households with the cost of living.
Freezing council tax was a start, but helping them to keep their energy bills as low as possible through offering a ‘collective energy switching service’ will be another boost.
It’s good news for residents that South Gloucestershire Council is now following other councils by introducing a ‘Switch and Save’ service to benefit local residents.”
