Zero hour contracts were introduced by South Gloucestershire Council on Labour’s watch, new figures show.
The embarrassing disclosure comes as Labour Leader Ed Miliband gives a speech today (Friday 25th April) attacking the ‘epidemic’ of zero hour contracts.
As at March this year, there are 151 zero hour contracts in place, according to South Gloucestershire Council’s Human Resources department.
These contracts were introduced by the council in 2013 – a year after Labour councillors swept to power on the authority by imposing their controversial system of decisions-by-committee.
Cllr Matthew Riddle (Con, Severn), Deputy Leader of the Conservative Group on the council said:
“Rather embarrassingly for Ed Miliband and the Labour Party, zero hour contracts were introduced at South Gloucestershire Council on Labour councillors’ watch.
It’s the height of hypocrisy for a party to claim there’s an ‘epidemic’ when members of the same party are helping to spread it.”
