Young Carer’s Nature Challenge Gets the Go-Ahead
Young carers received good news at South Gloucestershire Council’s Monday 14th September meeting of the Kings Forest Area Forum, Conservative Councillors voted to allocate £4,280 in grant money to the Conservation Volunteers.
This grant will be used by the Conservation Volunteers to fund a project called the Young Carer’s Nature Challenge, which will consist of six one day sessions, each available to up to 30 carers aged 13-19.
The sessions will involve outdoor activities to build employment skills and self-confidence, as well as to learn about and enjoy the natural environment. Activities are set to include work around trees and horticulture as well as practical conservation.
Speaking of the project, Conservative Chair of Kings Forest Area Forum Cllr June Bamford said: “young carers are often overlooked for opportunities, due to the commitments they have to those they look after they don’t often have the time or the money to take part in the many things on offer to young people. This can hamper social development and leave some of our bravest and most dedicated young people feeling that they have been deprived and have missed out. As such I am so pleased that we have been able to help by offering the Conservation Volunteers the funding they need to run these sessions”.
